Chapter 314: _See Who Taps Out First

Kyren’s POV

*****

When Lucian, Elian and Sylas left the Dark Lands, he immediately went to work on certain things.

First, checking in on Farrell and Ishtar.

The latter was fortunately recovering after getting healed of the divine injuries inflicted by the divine crystal explosion. But his commander still stayed at her side.

Kyren didn’t even need to peer into his mind to understand what was going on here.

Farrell getting so close to someone was... Almost unexpected. Adorable all the same.

But he didn’t care about any of that. Rather, his main focus was on two things. The Divine Crystal and keeping an eye on Arcadia’s movements.

"Our magi-tech experts have made sure to place extra protection wards around the excavation zone," Farrell explained after Kyren managed to get him away from Ishtar’s side for some minutes. "No chances of any Arcadian spies being able to breach through and do anything funny."

The Rogue king watched his commander lean against a wall in the hallway, the red crystal lights illuminating his distress. His eyes occasionally flicked to the large obsidian doors leading into the infirmary where they placed Ishtar.

Again... Kyren didn’t bother prying.

"Don’t be so sure about that." He murmured, rubbing his chin. "What about the Arcadian city we captured?"

"Runecrest?"

"Yes. That." Kyren ignored the fact that he’d forgotten the name. "Any updates or signs of Arcadia reacting to the soldiers we slaughtered?"

He wanted to force his mother’s hand.

Arcadia has always prized themselves on having such an elusive leader who didn’t involve herself in "mundane" matters. Little did the rest of the continent know the High Matron was a psychotic bitch playing the Evaros like a fiddle for millennia.

The battle in the Arcadian capital spurred a new desire in him. Since the High Matron was able to show herself in that battle and even threaten the Alpha Prince’s life... What if he pushes more?

Forcing her hands until she’ll have no choice but to react. He could already imagine her frustration and her doing something so stupid. Like revealing her true nature in HD.

"Nothing from the Arcadian side yet, my lord." Farrell’s response was disappointing. "We’ve gotten reports of their main forces trooping toward the capital. Maybe after what you did earlier today."

Kyren squinted.

Of course, she won’t fret at a few hundred soldiers being killed. Not when she had hundreds of thousands more at her beck and call, plus the Dark Hand and her hidden modified forces.

To get her attention... He needed to do something a little more drastic.

"What about the civilian captives?" His lips quivered with a mischievous smirk.

Farrell blinked, shock and confusion flashing through his eyes for a breath. "You... You said we could keep them alive for now, my lord." He paused, pupils darting like he was putting a puzzle together. "Are you... Do you want us to—"

"Kill them too?" Kyren chuckled darkly. "Oh, Hades no! That’ll be such a waste and I’m very sure my mother couldn’t care less about civilian casualties."

No. That would be too easy.

What he had planned was much more... Calculated. And chaotic.

Flicking his wrist, he summoned something. A charm in the shape of a spiral shell, with runes carved into it.

"Here," Kyren handed it over to Farrell. "Be cautious with it. I want you to personally carry on with this mission in Runecrest."

Farrell seemed like he was going to argue. Maybe he wanted to stay beside Ishtar longer.

But oh, he knew better.

"Tell me what I must do, my lord."

.

.

A couple of hours or so after that interaction, he got the call from Elian to come to Lunaria. Lucian’s celestial sovereign power up was a genuine surprise.

But what was even more surprising was Elian’s master plan to weaken Amara’s curse. He wasn’t even angry at him for keeping the curse a secret. After they went through with it, saving Aurora was next.

The battle against Amara gave him a view of just how deadly her mastery over the arts was. Manipulating time and fate with such precision within a pocket dimension took skill even he had to bow his head to.

Still, they forced her to retreat and saved Aurora.

However—

"You’re... You’re the one who reshapes it all. The moon blessed she’s always preached about." The princess stared at Elian with a mix of fear and awe in her eyes.

She took a step backwards, while his little flame could only watch her awkwardly.

"A–Aurora," Lucian tried placing a hand forward. "I know you’re confused right now but we really need to leave this pocket space. Like now." He stopped for a moment, his eyes softening. "Seraphyne. She’s back in the palace, stabilising and waiting for you."

That last part was enough to steal her attention away from Elian.

Seeing this, Kyren snapped his fingers. A portal with shimmering crimson edges appeared beside them. He grabbed Elian’s hand, taking the first steps with him.

Once they were all safely gathered in a Lunarian palace hallway, Kyren turned to Aurora.

"So, what did you see about my little flame?" He asked with genuine curiosity, arching a brow. "How... Extensive were the visions? Did Amara—"

"Kyren, be fucking considerate right now." Lucian cut him short, grabbing his sister close. "She needs rest. Lots of it. You can interrogate her when she’s gotten enough."

He led Aurora away after that. Elian followed closely behind the Alpha Prince, glancing back at Kyren and reaching him telepathically.

’Are you okay, Kyren?’

’Never been better.’ he replied confidently. ’Just worried about what the Lunarian princess might think of you now.’

’You mean your half cousin and my soon to be sister in law?’

’Don’t push it.’

’I don’t mind what she thinks of me at this point, Kyren.’ Elian’s mental voice was reassuring despite his retreating further and further with Lucian and Aurora. ’I just want to know what visions she saw. If it has any relevance to me truly. Worst comes to worst, I’ll confess my true nature to her.’

Kyren didn’t respond to that.

Slowly, the mind link faded like the lingering feeling of a kiss.

The Rogue king watched their silhouettes bend a corner to another part of the hallways and shifted. He stretched out his right hand, eyes landing on a holographic screen with a message he’s been anticipating.

"Mission accomplished, my lord. Your charm has taken root in the minds of the Runecrest citizens."

A cold grin curled his lips.

Amara mentioned a "chess board" she had control of. Hmph. Let the games begin then.

He’ll see who taps out first.

Soon, Runecrest wouldn’t remember their High Matron the same way.
